Question a dilema backing up my data

Okay so I have a WD 1 TB external hard drive. I bought this before i upgraded from OSX tiger to OSX snow leopard. I was using a software I bought to automatically back up my iMac called lifeagent and so far I haven't had any real complaints. However I was wondering if I should switch over to Time Machine now that my iMac has it.

Here are my concerns:

If I do switch to Time Machine my worry is its like a never ending trash can and therefore you wont ever be able to delete anything and as a result my memory on my external hard drive will used pretty quickly.

Also how does this system "feel" is it easy to navigate for my wife?

Can things be deleted or purged from the system permanently?

How often will it back up?

Anyways I am really open to any suggestions or ideas. rep will be awarded for any and all help.

The benefits of TM are worth it "just in case", imho. There's nothing from stopping you from putting your own backup folder on the same drive, so you can maintain your own backups as you would like as well..

I plug my TM drive in every few days.. if you just spent hours on an important project, I'd do a backup..
