Since you cannot OC a Mac and cannot get it with more than one card, everything below is with respect to PC's.

With the PCIe controller built into the chip (instead of on the motherboard), there is less latency. It really depends on what you plan to do with it. For single card gaming, the 860 would be better (however, the i5 750 would be even better, and cheaper). The 860 has the advantage over the 750 in multithreading abilities.

The 750 is basically a shrunken Core2Quad with some advances. By this, I mean it has 4 cores and no hyperthreading. It's great for everything you throw at it. It has 16 lanes for PCIe available, so it's best for one card (running at x16). If you were to run two cards, it would split the 16 lanes into two lanes running at x8.

In most cases, more bandwidth is better. However, with PCIe lanes, current cards (probably up to the 5850) show little to no difference between x8 and x16.

So that's a lot of info that isn't well organised.

Once again, it really depends on what you want to do with this computer.

If you want to game, build an i5 rig with a 5850 or 5870 and get a nice 2560 x 1600 30" screen. This can be done for around $2000.

If you want to render and game and good stuff like that, pick up an 860 and the nice screen, for a couple bucks more.

If you want to render and game hardcore, Grab the 920 and a couple 5870's plus the 30" screen for around $2500.

The Mac seems like it would be good for rendering and regular gaming. It has the advantage of having OSX (stock, and legally) as well as the other nice Mac add-ins.

Hope that helps.

For the average user, the iMac might be an alright choice. But this is OCN, and the new iMac just got completely owned.

Oh and suppose you don't want a single display, you can knock off $400 by going with 3 23" Dell P2310H connected through eyefinity, which gives you a much larger 5760x1080 screen. Can't do that on a Mac.

To be honest, I would happily opt for a lesser screen and go with more power for less money!

According to Newegg,

"Panel S-IPS"

Is that different than IPS?

Yes it has the IPS panel I wanted to see but there's no LED lighting.

I can't find anywhere to buy a screen that nice... actually, looking on newegg the closest I can find is this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824005115

30" LG LCD, 2560 x 1600 (bigger than the iMac), IPS Panel, but it's not an LED monitor... not sure if that makes too huge a difference.

A very nice i7 920 system I just parted out with the above monitor came up to $2,319.88. I put in a heatsink (equivalent price to a Megahalems, which is what I'd get) and fans too to make it more realistic. It also has a 1GB 4850 instead of the 512MB version the iMac has. These are all quality components, very close to stuff I'd actually buy for myself. Maybe I could've gone cheaper in some areas but I wanted to make sure it was a quality build. Missing the OS and kb/mouse too.

edit: OOPS I forgot a hard drive on this build, lol... add $87 for a 1TB 7200RPM HD... new total is $2406.88.

Just because I'm curious I'll try and match the iMac computer specs as closely as I can, but go for the cheapest solutions. My above build could overclock to at least 4GHz.

sweet jolly ranchers, get that monitor out of there.

It's also 30 inches, which is much more expensive than a 27' screen. (my 27 I got used for $350, you never see good 30' displays below 700 or so)

That's totally beside the point though, the 2 machines aren't comparable at all, the target market is totally different.

The mac really isn't too bad of a ripoff though, it looks really nice (both the monitor and the design). And yes, design is worth $500 to many many people.
