Do you know why CCFLs are still used in desktop monitors? Because the only real advantage LEDs have over them is that they draw less power and are thinner, which makes them useful in laptops, but not so much in desktops. Apple used an LED backlight to save space, and as a marketing gimmick. The screen wouldn't look any different had it been CCFL backlit.

Also, the lighting has an effect on the color. One would notice more saturated colors with LED displays.

The comparison is a tough one since the only other all-in-one is the 600xt but you can't even choose comparable items, no i7. Comparing a regular desktop to it may be a bit off too since you have to buy a separate monitor so the cost will be higher. One of the pluses of getting all-in-ones is that you save some money because everything is packaged together.

I think with the screen size, it makes a big difference because to get a screen that size and that quality separate is going to be a huge part of the total cost.

27.5'' iMac is actually a very good deal, you can't build a system that's as integrated as the imac is with a 2560x1600 IPS panel

Even taking the $1,000 monitor out of the equation; if I paid ~1,500-1600 for a computer that had a 4850 in it I'd rage out.

Well if you want a hardcore gaming machine don't get the iMac, but it's good value for everything else and regular gaming, if you don't need to play Crysis on a 2560x1440 on max settings and you'll settle for low/med settings or a lower resolution or even lighter games, then it should do just fine.
