I can try to answer you from my limited experience...
The first thing you need to do is to jumper the external to a master so that MAC recognizes it.
Then, take your MAC installation disc, or make one if you don't have it, put it in the Mac, and reboot holding down 'C'.
Run through the Mac setup utility and format the drive properly.
Then install the OS.

Make sure you have a working and bootable installation disc with those utilities available.

I think you should use the (journal) method for formatting in Mac OS.

Do you want to put it into her macbook or just use it as an external boot drive? If you want to put it in it you'll need a 2,5inch drive, and it's a PITA to get it done, as you basically have to pull the whole damn machine apart, to the point where you can look through the bottom, with about ten thousand different sized screws coming out of it..

And then the worst part is to figure out where all the screws came from again..

Swapping a hard drive on a Macbook is actually a very easy task, so I don't know what the hell you're on about
