This is for those of you who own GPS-enabled, Windows Mobile 5 or 6 devices. I personally did this on an HTC Mogul, but anything with those two characteristics should work.

The goal for this endeavor was to be able to have the GPS unit in the phone track my progress and plot the points. I am a cyclist and always take my phone with me, but thought that it would be cool to map where I ride while I do it. Not that I couldn't just make a map with mapmyride.com, but this would be a good use of the phone's GPS.

First of all, you will need TrackMe, which you can download here.

After installing it, open it up and click on the gear-looking icon to open up the setup. On the "General" tab, make a new trip with whatever name you choose. In the "Display" tab, change the measurement standard to Metric or Standard, whichever you prefer. The "GPS" tab should be fine with the defaults.


In the "Storage" tab, make sure the data points are done at a reasonable interval, say 30 seconds. You can also set the range at which to exclude data points. I chose 30 feet, something along those lines should be fine. 15 feet is too short because my GPS unit can jump back and forth 15 feet even if I'm standing still.

In "Live Tracking", check the "Generate KML file" box.


Lastly, scroll over to the "Remote" tab and put in a desired username and password. If there isn't already a user in the database with that name it will automatically create it for you.

Hit OK, the configuration is done.

Head outside, or wherever you can get a GPS lock. On the main page, hit the big green button on the top right hand. The GPS will turn on and it will start plotting your position.
Move around some and you will see that every time it samples a point, it tells you the bearings and then uploads the new KML file. This can be read by Google Earth.


Press the red button to stop sampling once you have finished your trip.

You can open the maps in Google Maps mobile, however, the first nine points are all that will load. To load more than the first nine, open up Google Maps or Google Earth on your PC. Search for http://www.luisespinosa.com:80/trackme/routes/<username>.kml
This should open a map up that plots all the points you hit and draws a path line.

You might want to also note that this requires an updated version of the .NET 2.0 Compact Framework. At least it did for me. You can download it here.

I should also suggest that you use this application to save the battery life of your phone. It shuts off your screen while still keeping the GPS active, whereas the GPS would usually deactivate itself as soon as you turned the screen off. All you need to do to get your screen back on again is press the power button.

Thanks for the heads up on .NET framework. I already had that installed to run some other programs, so I didn't notice that.

Also, I believe if you just use the "Screen Off" softkey in TrackMe, then that will do what you described. Also, just pressing the power button on the Mogul should cut the screen off without losing GPS connection. However, different settings and devices may be different, so thanks for the addition.
