Ok here's the deal I'm getting an 8G iPhone 1st Gen in a trade and was wondering if I could use the iPhone like an iTouch just using the iPod, App Store, and WiFi. I don't have a sim card so will I be able to use it like that?

As far as i know, yes. You just can't use the phone or EDGE, but you should still have wifi and everything.

I was told it had to be activated through iTunes so I wouldn't be able to but if I jailbroke it (dont really want to) then I'd be able to use it how i want to

But I don't see why it has to be activated to use the non-phone features...

Has the phone not already been activated?
__________________Ziphone can also activate the iphone, not sure how it works though, and I thought that you needed to at least have an att sim card in the phone, even if it is a none working sim card..

I myself own an iPhone...the first gen...I would say that yes you should be able to use it as just an iTouch if that is what you prefer. However, it could also pop up with the stupid message like most AT&T phones and say that you need to have a SIM and have it activated in order for it to work. Give it a try...it never hurts.

I don't see why you couldn't but you might have trouble gettin 2.0 firmware upgrade. I know for the iPhone it is free and for iPod touch it costs $10 off the iTunes online store. Ask your friend if he can get 2.0 on there before the deal, therefore giving you access to the appstore (and I hear Safari is faster in 2.0)
