I got an iPhone 3GS 16gb and I have 6 days left on my 30 day trial before I am stuck with AT&T for the next two years. I love the phone but the service not so much. I am trying to decide whether to try and unlock the phone or not and get service with Verizon which has much better service in my area.

How hard it this to do? I looked around on the net a little but a lot of the stuff I read was confusing.

If a phone is unlocked and used on a different carrier, can I still get apps from Apple? Does the phone function normally as if it were still with AT&T or will it loose some function? Also, does unlocking also require jailbreaking?

One more, if the phone is unlocked only (if that is possible) is there anyway to get busted and the phone be re-locked?

Verizon uses CDMA, the iphone uses GSM, they are two totally different cell networks and if you unlock an iphone you can only use it on a GSM network. you cannot get busted for it since you own the phone.

The only company you could use with the iphone if its unlocked is T-Mobile and Rogers (in North America anyway)

yeah, verizon is cmda, meaning it doesn't use sim cards. im not too sure about the companies in the states as i am in canada, but you need to have a carrier that is gsm (sim card) like t-mobile. if you do unlock it you will still be able to download apps from the apple app store as apple itself owns and controls the app store not at&t. this is one of the main reasons apple ended up giving their iphones to at&t and not verizon, as verizon wanted control of the app store (for profit... which obviously didnt sit too well with apple).

anyways, if you are able to unlock it (there are purchaseable guides online as well as if you go to any bootlegging store theyll do it for you for cheap) it is really easy to jailbreak as well. so if you do end up unlocking it, you might as well jailbreak it aswell.

you do realise u have to pay for the unlock right? try googling for iphone-dev u'll be given a blog... everything's free...

rescuing a brick iphone is jz a restore on itunes. =)

If you pay for a iphone unlock you are a complete idiot. There are plenty of sites that have guides that are free. Most paid guides are just guides that resell the free information the iphone dev team puts their heart and soul into. Check out the guides on modmyi.com or hackthatphone.com. And you can always good iphone dev team blog/wiki or even easier good pwnagetool.

Thanks everyone. I think I will look into jailbreaking. Sounds like it could be fun to try. I guess unfortunately I have to stick with AT&T though because I don't get T Mobile in my area.

It took me and my friend a few attempts at it, but it's simple once you realize what you need to do, and then it's just fun to do all the stupid things, like Dunk Hunt with tapping the birds.

Ok, I am reading but not understanding. I am trying to find something that walks me through step by step from the very beginning of what I have to do. My phone just FYI is a 16GB 3GS phone version 3.0.1.
