I am going to get a verizon smartphone and i'm not going to get the data plan because i don't get data service in my area. My question is do i get charged for using the wifi on my phone? Probably a stupid question.

Nope, you don't get charged, although make sure that it doesn't accidentally connect to Verizon's network.

Sometimes when I haven't established a link to my network at home (forget to/not connected yet) my phone will start connecting to the 3G network.

I thought verizon smartphones required a data package. But if it doesn't require a data package, there should be an option to never connect to the network or only connect through wi-fi.

And the only stupid question is the one not asked. Ask away, that's what we're here for.

other than the cost of the wifi itself (if youre the one paying for it), no connecting to wifi is free.
