Default Using mobile phone on plane

I was watching Entourage last night and they were using their cells while flying (on a private jet, but I don't see why it would make a difference). I know it's a TV show but is it possible to have your mobile phone work (able to call/text) while you are flying?

It doesn't but there is a change it could and they don't want to take any risks. And even if it did it wouldn't be so bad but if lots of people did it than they wouldn't be able to communicate with other planes and the tower.

I dont think so, cause the radio wave might interfere with something on the plane. That's why they keep asking people to turn off there phones during flights

If the planes are set up to allow it then yeah it can work. Basically you need a mobile phone transmitter on board and then that is connected to a radio system like the pilot would use.

Or at least I think I'm right.

Have you ever had your phone next to an amp and hear the "beep - beep da beep" noise? That's the main reason you have to turn them off. If you just asking if it's possible regardless of that then yeh probably if you're at a low enough altitude. If you're really high up I guess the range would be too far.

It might, but it does not 99.99% of the time (MythBusters tested it a while ago). The problem is thought that the cellphones are constantly updated and uses different frequency. Its easier for them to not allow any cell-device then test each one individually to see if it actually interfere with the planes equipment or not. Its safer that way too.

There are systems that can be installed in private planes that relay the cell phone signal through proper channels so that it does not interfere with the rest of the communications. I flew on my dad's friends G4 which had one of these systems installed. It's very small, smaller than a small reciever would be. It's basically just a relay that sends the cell phone signal out with the rest of the communications.
