Default AT&T Phone Purchasing Requirements?

On some phones in the ATT store, like the Nokia E71x or the Samsung Jack, they have either this on the bottom:

Quote:
Requires purchase of a $30/mo data service. 2 year contract & new activation required.
OR
Quote:
Mail-In Rebate requires $20/mo data or messaging service. Service can be canceled at any time. 2 year contract & new activation required.
My dilemma is that I want to get off of the data plan which is getting quite expensive. Do I really have to sign up for the data plan or can I just cancel it right after I get the phone? Almost every phone I like requires this. I would also like to know if I can disable the 3G connection on phones, so if I accidentally click the internet explorer I don't get charged.

If the phone states it requires a Data Plan, then you must have the Data Plan tied to your account in order to purchase and use the phone.

Like the iPhone, on AT&T, you cannot use the iPhone without the Data Plan if you bought it from AT&T. You cannot remove the Data Plan from your account either, as there is no option to do so.

Most phones have a Data Plan for a reason. If you're wanting a new phone which has a Data Plan tied to it, there is a reason for it, and if you use the phone without the Data Plan, it would be a waste of having the phone.

The problem is with me not using it as much. I want the full keyboard since I like to text, but I don't need the extra email and data web surfing stuff. I have an iPhone and am getting off the data plan since it's costing quite a lot. I had a Samsung Blackjack which had 3G but didn't use the web browser and was never charged extra. Couldn't I just go into the phone's settings and delete the data connection settings so it won't connect?

How are you getting off the Data Plan? The Data Plan is required if you are an iPhone user and with AT&T.

you could, but it still will charge your the 30 a month.

The reason you pay so little for those expensive smart phones is because att subsidises the cost, they take a big hit on the price of those phones(the price you pay is not what att pays, way less infact) You used to be able to do this feature, but att recently switched this.

You have other choices though, you could switch carriers where the data plans are cheaper, T-mobile and sprint have pretty good deals on their service, depending if you can get good service in your area.

Your other option is to get an unlocked smart phone from the internet, and just get a dumb phone from att, that dosent require data, then put your sim in the smart phone after, and hope att dosent switch it after the fact(not sure if they will or not). but keep in mind smart phones cost alot more than what you pay att for that subsidized price.

I did this with an unlocked smartphone that I already had when I switched to AT&T. It worked very well.

I was thinking cancelling the Data Plan once I sell my iPhone. I don't feel like I use it enough to constitute the price.

But then if it won't connect, I wouldn't need the data plan right? So then I can probably cancel the service. Is that possible?

But there are phones on the AT&T store that are 3G (like Samsung Impression) that don't require the data plan but instead require a $20 messaging plan. So does that mean, you don't need data even though it does have 3G capability?

You likely have to tell them that you've lost the phone or broke it or something in order for them to cancel the data plan.

And, you're correct - with a non PDA/Smartphone like the Samsung Impression, you won't be required to purchase a data plan. However, if you don't have the data plan, you won't be able to use the internet.

grab an unlocked off ebay, it will cost less than the data plan does after your 2 year contract.

For that matter, I'll be having a couple of smartphones up for sale soon. One is unlocked and the other is still AT&T locked.
