I know there are bazillions of threads about this but I have some things that have never really made sense to me and was hoping someone maybe able to clarify these for me:
1) iphone network locking - I bought a unit directly from the apple store in Australia and put a vodafone sim card in it and it worked fine. Does that mean its now locked to Vodafone or can I swap the SIM at any time? 2) Brick the phone If I use the Red Snow program to jail break my phone (Dont have my head entirely around that yet though) can I brick my phone? What happens if I screw the break up? Can I restore the original settings and use it as if nothing has ever happened?

Redsnow is very easy to use and you shouldn't brick it. If it fails, you should be able to restore to the original firmware using itunes.

You can use any company that has a sim card, it is not forever locked to vodafone. The only way you can brick your iphone is if you update the firmware with the jailbreak/unlock already installed, that is a big NO NO!

So if I did Jailbreak it I would have to reverse that if I wanted to update the firmware?? But then if it was jail broken what would be the point of updating the firmware?

the iphone has a sort of "anti-bricking" mode which is DFU mode, device firmware upgrade, if something does go wrong all you will have to do is download an ipsw (which is the firmware) and restore it with itunes.
the iPhones are usually locked to a certain carrier for legal reasons(MONEY Reasons) and people like GeoHot and DevTeam work on ways to Jailbreak and Unlock it. Jailbreak is getting write privileges to the iphone and allowing you to use third party applications. Unlocking will let you use the iphone on any GSM carrier. The latest jailbreak and Unlock will be released on Nov 4 and are completely FREE by GeoHot and will be available for download at http://www.blackra1n.com Hope this answered you question.

hope you still need this.
blackra1n.com for jailbreaking latest iphone 3gs firmwares. And it is IMPOSSIBLE to software brick your iphone. As you can always start from the beginning with a simple itunes restore. Either in Restore mode or DFU mode. That's the good news. And about your lock to vodafone, since you said u bought it in the apple store, it would be officially (Factory) unlock regardless of what sim you put in. if you're gonna use blacksn0w (blackra1n) to jailbreak your official unlock, just make sure you activate your phone first before jailbreaking it. I would not know the consequences as i myself have a factory unlocked unit which is on the 3.0 firmware (latest firmware 3.1.2)
