Well, assuming he has WiFi where he is, and the signal is strong, and the source speed for the WiFi is good, yes.

I really don't care about the speed. If it's 2G, that's ok with me.

Jailbreak your iphone 3g, then go to cydia and find UltraSn0w to unlock the 3G.
Restart your phone, install the T-Mobile SIM card, go to Settings, Network and disable the 3G connection.

Enjoy :]

Unlocking and Jailbraking are two completely different things

Jailbreak is Just getting right to be able to write to the iphone/ ipod with out having to have apple signatures.

UNlocking is for the iPhone only since it will be allowing you to go on different GSM Carriers like tmobile BlackSn0w will be here on the 4 and its completely free. DONT PAY FOR IT!!!

and you do have to have both. since one will give you the right to write and the other will unlock it.

edit

make sure you are either on 3.0 or your basebnad (modem firmware is at 04.26.08) if your at 3.1 or 3.1.2 you will have to wait until Nov 4

Thats not true, you actually have to Jailbreak then unlock using an app/software call YellowSn0w or UltraSn0w depending on your firmware.
