Hi, i'm Barry Scott!

At the moment I have the jailbroken OS 3.0 on my iPod Touch 2Gen. I have seen so many different tools to update/jailbreak, i'm not sure what to use.
I want to update to jailbroken 3.1.2. What is the right Windows based tool to do this with? When I update, will I lose all my data/apps currently installed?

You can use Pwnage tool on a MAC to create a custom IPSW for you to work with ur ipod touch, on windows, i'm not sure if blackra1n works to jailbreak your 3.1.2
If you are not really in need for 3.1.2, keep your 3.0 (my iphone still runs 3.0 although it's officially unlocked), you would have to install your cydia apps over again other than that, as long you purchased apps with your apple ID, you can redownload them on iTunes which can be synced later.

Hmm... seems Blackra1n works with all devices and 3.1.2, so I think i'll use that

that's not a problem i guess, all i know is that blackra1n jailbroken 3.1.2 OTB iPhone and the iPod Touch 3g (before the new 3g came onto shelf). But you can try. =)
and if you want to install cydia applications all together without doing it one by one, you should try looking for the app called aptbackup on cydia, install it then run it, backup your ipod on your computer, restore to 3.1.2 followed by a sync then jailbreak your ipod and install aptbackup again. =) and load the aptbackup file. Run cydia and u're done. =) Sorry for the english. =)

Wow, BlackRa1n is stupidly easy.
Literally, update to 3.1.2 in iTunes, open Blackra1n, click "Make it ra1n" and it's jailbroken. No messing with IPSW files any more!

yeap, that's the way it's done. Just wanna ask, try restarting your iPod, do you have to re-run blackra1n?

Hit a slight problem. Got it installed all fine and OK... went to install SBSettings and it then got stuck on "respringing". So I shut it down (home and power buttons) and now it won't get past the Apple logo upon reboot :/

Yeah, I stuck it in DFU, re-did 3.1.2 and blackra1n'd again.
