Default New monitor or graphics card?

Ok so i'm between 2 minds as to what I should get for my next purchase. I'm going to be doing a computer upgrade around the summer (new cpu, mobo and ram)

but next on the list is either a new monitor or a new graphics card (preferably DX10)

My present monitor is a 19" BenQ 8ms (FP91G+) 1280x1024 i'm thinking about maybe a 24" screen? What i'm wondering is which should I buy first, a new graphics card then wait a few months and get a monitor with my computer upgrade... or get a new monitor now, then in a few months get a graphics card with my computer upgrade?

What i'm worried about is gaming, will my games suffer from being run on such a high resolution? Or is it worth paying out the money now for a good DX10 card when my monitor can only do 1280x1024.

All opinions and ideas welcome.

What is your budget?

Edit: Go for new moniter, The 7900GTX will hold you over fine until other DX10 cards come out

Agreed. Your 7900GTX can take the higher resolutions on pretty much every game out there until you upgrade to DX10. And their will be a new round of Vid Cards with the coming of summer with R600 and the new G80s coming out. So you might want to hold off on that anyway.

So basically just get a monitor, monitors are generally safe investments because they don't become obsolete very quickly like most computer components.

care to recommend a good monitor for me. I'm out of the loop with whats good in the monitor world at the moment. Oh and I really don't like widescreen, do they make 24" 4:3 LCD monitors?

Why don't you like widescreen, is is quite wonderful for gaming, and watching the occasional movie if you do that with you computer. Perhaps it isn't ideal for browsing the web (hence my dual monitor setup). And I don't think they make anything but widescreen monitors above like 22".

get over the issue of not liking the widescreen format and start getting used to it you will thank me later... a moniter is something that most people dont upgrade as often as the rest of the system.. so i would get one now.. and when the time comes you will get a better performing card for the same price as the ones out now .. or get one thats out now at a lesser price.. either way i think the smart way is to get the moniter first and card with the rest of the system..

I think everything over 21" is widescreen now, you may be able to find the odd one or two that is 4:3.

I heard the Dell 24" are pretty good, which use the Samsung panel, so a Samsung should be just as good.

I know I'll have to go widescreen also some day (I am a hater also). I prefer the extra real estate (more pixels) over widescreen.

Oh well.. such is life.

On topic:
Get a new monitor. 24" widescreen will be nice (even if you don't like wide).

It's indeed better to wait with the card, since competition will be more fierce in the summer, and there will be more choices.
