Default hdmi or coaxial+component for HD reciever?

I got the HD DVR reciever installed Today but the cable guy used the coaxial cable and component cables instead of HDMI, why? I have like 4 HDMI inputs-2 ocupied- I thought HDMI was better than anything else, should I use HDMI instead? Thanks. Oh and this new HD DVR reciever is slick looking, shiny and black, perfect match for hd dvd player.

Coaxial, Optical, and HDMI Audio all perform the same. Visually, HDMI is generally better.

Maybe he ran out of cables? A HDMI cable isn't more expensive than cost of coaxial and component cables. There might be a $1-2 difference but not much more.

I found an 8' HDMI cable in the reciever's box, good idea to use it or not? As for Directv, it's awesome. I got NBA and NFL HD channels for free...something we didn't have before with our HD package.

Ehm, make sure that the receiver can output sound VIA HDMI, if not you'll have to get HDMI and an Optical Audio cable also known as a TOSLink Cable.

I wouldn't bother. Unless your TV has a problem with a component connect (some do), it will look the same.

He definitely used coaxial/component because it is cheaper. HDMI cables are really expensive and my cable company laughed at me when I told them I needed them to install an HDMI IC for my HD TV.

Just go to Best Buy/Fry's/Circuit City and buy one if you are in a hurry and can't wait to order one online and have it shipped to you.

HDMI cables really aren't that expensive... their prices are just jacked up because consumers don't know better and stores like 400-800% margins.

i went throught the same thing. they do it to save cost. they have 3 types of dig cable boxes (all motorolas) and all 3 have component out, but only the dvr has hdmi out

it doesnt really matter which you use right now, but if they institute the protection flag, you will have to use hdmi to view protected content (hdcp requires a diital connection)

additionally, if you use the digital connection, there is no chance of running into overscan issues when connected to a pc. it will act like a monitor (resolution-based display) instead of like a tv screen (frequency and overscan based)

I noticed a better picture from my HD dvr cable box when I went from component to HDMI. You could just tell it was cleaner, less noise. Component is still an analog signal is it not? The digital connection means less translation and re-translation.
