Default 1440x900 unselectable

I have recently purchased a 19" widescreen Dell S199WFP to use as a secondary monitor for my HTPC (Gigabyte 780G, running XP), and I am experiencing some resolution issues. I have attached it via the VGA output, and I haven't been able to select the native resolution of the monitor (1440x900) in any way: I cannot set a custom resolution through the Catalyst control panel and I cannot set it through Windows. The EDID information is correct (it shows the max native resolution as 1440x900) but I cannot set it in any way. I can choose from 800x600 to 2000x1600 and most everything in between, but there are no 16:10 options.

Installing the driver that came with the monitor does nothing to help at all. In some quick googling, I have seen mention of the same issue being resolved by a registry hack to adjust the driver; I have not been able to find the hack, nor any information in the registry pertaining to resolution settings.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

You said secondary monitor. What resolution is your other monitor running?

I had trouble getting my 5:4 (1280x1024) CRT to run together with my 16:10 (1680x1050) LCD as primary... couldn't get them to both run at their native resolutions at the same time.

I probably should have been more specific. Currently, the 19" Dell is the only monitor attached to the computer. I previously had my 42" Plasma connected for watching movies (everything works fine with that); when I fix the issues with this LCD I will be reconnecting the plasma. Running the plasma and a secondary monitor at their native resolution has not been a problem in the past, I hooked up an old CRT at the same time as the plasma and everything was fine. My issue is with being unable to select 1440x900 as a valid resolution.

Vegnagun, rebooting does nothing to change my situation whatsoever.

Reinstalling the video drivers was the first thing I tried; I tried the ones on the CD that came with the motherboard, the latest ATI drivers and a previous version of the ATI drivers that I saw discussions about claiming it fixed this issue.

However, I have discovered something interesting: the lack of 1440x900 only applies to the VGA output on my computer. When I switched the monitor to DVI I could select 1440x900 without a problem. I need to run this monitor on VGA however, as the digital output of the motherboard will be going to the plasma.

Any other suggestions?

Buy a card with two DVI out ports.
=\
I don't know. I had the same problem about a year ago and that was the only solution I could find.
good luck!

When I use my TV and monitor both at once I am forced to make a custom resolution for the second screen even though individually each one works perfect.

After some serious sluething, I have come to the conclusion that what I wanted to achieve (1440x900 over VGA on the 780g) isn't possible. The VGA out does not have any 16:10 resolution options with the current driver (and no plans to include it, it seems) with digital output enabled, and I cannot use an adapter due to the digital output being occupied by my TV. I have thus resigned myself to returning the monitor and trying to find a rare species known as the 4:3 aspect ratio panel.

Thank you all for your help.
