Default My Review - Dell 2209WA IPS Panel - Photos + Input Lag

I'll make it short, upgraded from a Hannspree 19" to a Acer P223WD 22", and I didn't like the glossy panel, I then moved onto a Samsung T220HD and I found the viewing angles and back light bleed impossible to ignore. Then I looked at a few 16:9 24" monitors but still feared the T220HD's issues. Just before biting the bullet on a 24" Samsung I found this and just went for it because of the promised quality. From what I have heard this is like a cut down IPS, not as good as the more expensive IPS monitors but still much better than any IPS or PVA out there, and for £200 its a steal. I'll make it clear at the start, In my honest opinion I would find it hard to downgrade any TN panel after using this for a week. I'm a novice reviewer so be patient

Mini Review

Out of the box
The packaging was safe and sturdy and connecting the stand to the monitor was like Lego, it simply clicks onto the back into a strong connection. There is a lot of room for the connections and the hole in the stand for cable management simply works well.

First Impressions
Turning on the power button already gave me a sense of quality just by the feel of it. The monitors matte, simplistic and elegant design is very likable, and the stand has proven to be very convenient as it can lower the display to just over 4cm above the surface the stand is on. The stock calibration I would say is about 90-95% of the way to optimum calibration, the average user would only change the brightness to suit their needs. Taking note that this is indeed a IPS panel I immediately put a couple of HD trailers and photos up while crawling around my room checking out the viewing angles which are just phenomenal compared to my previous TN panels, although to keep this review as unbiased as possible I must mention that the viewing angles from above are not as good as below or from the sides, still better than TN but not just good as all the other angles. I sat down and watched the Manchurian Candidate with my girlfriend which "off topic" left us with a uneasy feeling and also good feelings about this monitor as we did not have to move it to bed height due to the excellent viewing angles. I also noticed due to the lack of it, there is no light bleed! My first Impressions are very positive.

In depth
After a couple of days of use I've found a few interesting things to take note of. Firstly if you plan on using the usb hub built into the monitor, try not to use more important usb peripherals as when the monitor switches off so does the hub, so if you accidentally switch your monitor off with say your usb wireless adapter plugged in you may have to wait to get your internet back on, well at least I do . Another thing would be that the panel appears to be quite fragile, if I slightly pressure a tips of the panel you can see light bleed.

Plain old picture
After using a samsung T220 the first thing that I can compare is that the picture on the T220 seemed to have more color, but really it was washed up and unrealistic. True calibration means real color and lighting, therefore while the picture may seem a little bit plain to a user from a over-saturated TN, once you load up a clear movie like Bruce almighty and look at the color of the environment and faces you can instantly see what true calibration is, it looks real, clear and balanced.

Some photos - Apologies for the non-professional quality

Input Lag Test - Dell 2209WA (rated 6ms) vs Samsung sm2253bw (rated 2ms)

Looks good!

My Conclusion
I have missed a few things but this is a mini review such as a direct crt input lag comparison due to a lack of Crt's hanging around, I am a novice reviewer but I hope I helped some users. I've missed out on the software which came with the monitor and honestly cant be bothered to use it as I'm happy with the monitor as it is. In my honest opinion this monitor is golden compared to all the other monitors in the same price range, I can easily recommend to anyone looking for quality. And also it seems that the input lag is excellent for a IPS especially compared to a TN panel such as the Samsung SM2253BW,

-Pro's:
Overall Superb Picture Quality
Viewing angles a TN can only dream of.
IPS in TN price range
Versatile well constructed Stand + Wall mount compatible
Input lag on par with good TN panels.

-Con's
Usb Hub turns off when monitor is off
Lack of HDMI
No 24" older brother

Anyway thats that!

Nice review! I have actually just gotten the monitor yesterday, and everything has be fine so far! (I don't really like the matte, I'm more of a glossy guy but yeah I can live with it) I've got one stuck pixel in my bottom right corner, but thankfully it only shows up on red, and it's not in the 16:9 aspect ratio of my movies.

This is my first IPS monitor, coming from CRTs/MVAs and the viewing angles are phenomenal compared to MVAs, also I did some LCD tests over at: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ and it just about passed every test 100%.

The only problem I found really was a white uniformity issue, when the screens fully black you can see the white of the screen kinda fading in on differnt angles, when i move back 2 arms lengths I can't see it (this is because this is a cheaper IPS panel, and it doesn't have the A-TW Polarizer or w/e that the higher end IPS ones do (1000$, lol.) But I don't really notice it on anything but pure black, it doesn't change color or anything for me.

digital versus reported a average MS lag of 9~ milisecond input lag compared to a crt (wow!)

http://www.digitalversus.com/duels.p...0&p2=4605&ph=1
here's a link to the comparisons, and to a comparison to your old monitor bean

I got this for 224$, I'd reccomend this for anyone looking for a 22" for gaming, movies, or office work, it's a pretty sweet deal.

Nice to hear good things from another user . Funny enough I have a dead pixel in my bottom right corner too but ever since the pixel test I haven't seen it. I'm also very happy with the response times compared to a samsung TN .

Hope you enjoy, its great for movies and games.

Nice review.I have one to and so far its one of the best monitors ive owned.Comparing it to the 3 (Still have one) Ultra Sharp 2007FP's (2x S-IPS and one S-PVA which i still have)This monitor's viewing angles and image quality is just as good as my 2007FP's.It has less black light bleed than my 2007FP and Blacks seem richer than the two S-IPS's paneled ones and about equal to the S-PVA paneled one

This is one nice monitor for the money.Im very happy with it and im glad i bought it.

Realize this is an old thread,
but I want to ask a question to any owner of this Dell 2209WA.
Is this monitor silent? Is there any backlight humming or any other background noise created by the monitor at different brightness settings?
beanbagofdoom,
you have "System: Silence" in your signature, can I take it to mean this monitor is for practical purposes, Silent?

1 foot away from my face and I hear nothing, I'm also 18 years old so its not age lol. If I stick my ears hard against the back I can hear electricity, but only when my ear is on the chassis. Its pretty damn silent otherwise.

EDIT: I have returned a monitor in the past for humming, so yes this monitor is also for that purpose. Generally most monitors are quiet when on brightness <90. But this monitor always stays silent, even with brightness at 100.
