Default When will the standard resolutions stop going up so fast?

In 2005, 1024x768 was pretty good. In 2006, 1280x1024 became the standard. In 2007, 1440x900 started to peek its head, and in 2008, 1680x1050 had become very common.

This year, I feel like more people are moving up to 1900x1080 or 1920x1200. Is this annual increase going to continue this way?

Are people's eyes getting worse or their peripheral vision getting better? I don't see how this can be maintained. Even with my 22" monitor, I already feel like I'm not seeing 100% of the screen in focus...I don't understand it. Then again, maybe people sit farther away from their desk than I do...but it can't be that significant of a difference considering they still need to reach their keyboards and mice.

Yeah.. and what about those graphical advancements (well, not since consoles went mainstream)? Who needs that crap? It is so annoying!

That's...not my point guys. I'm not talking about speeds or capacities, which can always improve. I just can't wrap my head around monitor size based on HUMAN limitations of sight, etc.

A bad analogy, but one that illustrates my point, would be like if mice kept getting bigger or something. Eventually, it wouldn't make sense cuz it wouldn't fit our hands well.

With monitors (that are sitting a foot or two away from our face), isn't there some limit to how big they can get?

Just a theoretical discussion.

I see what you are getting at... Like televisions, I think that monitors will hit a point where enough size is enough. I find 26-30" PERFECT, but too broke to afford. With Win 7 you can manipulate the size of everything to suit large monitors too, so at least Microsoft is realizing that aspect of large monitors.

Theoretical idea: Sitting 2' from the monitor will be very different in the future. Monitors will be 3 dimensional soon enough. You will have a 4" thick monitor that will look like it's 2' deep. Can you imagine that with gaming? How will we control a cursor in a 3d environment like this? Will we be using a hand-sensor-array of some sort that will 'see' the movement of our hands? (Sort of like the cheesy movie 'Gamer' that just came out.)

Ray tracing is supposed to be implemented into standard graphics by 2012. This will change the look of games dramatically. It requires massive FP calcs!

Good stuff dude. Maybe there will be setups where monitors will take up increasingly more space--away from the keyboard and mouse--and further distance will require bigger screens. That 3d aspect could drastically change things as well.

Hard to imagine a limit...I remember thinking 19" was gaudy and unnecessary just a few years ago haha.

I agree with you kind of. Ever since I've started using a 1920x1200 Resolution on a 25.5in screen it seems like I should be sitting a lot further back then I am sometimes. I mean you remember hearing when you were younger don't sit too close to the TV cause it'll ruin your eyesight? I kind of feel that could be happening with these huge monitors not far enough back.

Quinn, you have my dream monitor, the t260HD. That is the sexiest monitor out right now, in my opinion. Insane clarity, sharpness and brilliance.

Future.. It's the way of the future... the way of the future.. the way of the future.. lol
