I think I am doin' it wrong (as per usual).

I put the firmware files for the Sony 40v-5100 (etc.) on a usb flash drive, and plugged that into the tv, which did nothing.

The firmware update is in the form of an executable file (ie. the filename ends with .exe).
It runs from a computer, not a TV

Download the Update:
If you decide to download the update, you must have a USB storage device, such as a Sony Micro Vault® or something similar, in order to transfer the update from your computer to your TV. Sony is aware that not all USB storage devices are compatible with our TVs. View the list of compatible USB storage devices.
