Default Buying 32" or larger TV as monitor

I hooked up a 32" Samsung I had in my house to my GTX285 via HDMI

I'm not sure what it's native resolution is, or if its 1080p, or 720p, all I know is that it says HDTV on it (its about 2 years old)... long story short the 1920x1080 resolution makes vista look like crap, and text is barely legible. The only resolution I can make look nice is 1176x664, which is much lower than what my 22" ran...

So my questions:
a) is this normal, or is there anything I can do about it?
b) if I buy a TV that would be a 32" or 42", what do I need to look for resolution wise to make it look nice?

Interesting, my samsung 32" goes to 1920x1080 and it looks better than my bro's 24" 1920x1080 lg monitor. Its crystal clear. Try setting it 1366x768 that is a standard res of 720p tv's.

A 2 year old 32" is likely a 720 as 1080 32" are rather new to the market from what I can figure as I've been doing a lot of comparative shopping in the 30ish to 4oish inch units lately.

If you tried the 1920x1080 resolution and it made it very horrible to see, then that's not a valid/supported/native resolution for the monitor.

It is most likely a 720P set like mine, and the native resolution is 1360x768.

A lot of 32" and 42" TVs are only 720P.

Also, just because someone elses TV is 32" and displays a 1080P resolution does not mean yours will. I have a fantastic Samsung 32" and it is a 720P set only. There are some 1080P 32" TVs, but not every one is a 1080P set, so if someone elses does 1080P, it doesn't mean yours will.

Well I've created a "custom resolution" that's 1366x768 and it looks good, but am I stuck with a task bar that's 2 inches tall?

I don't think that my vista has this option?

Also what I more mean is that I don't like having this big ol fancy TV... that's running at a lower resolution than my 22", so I can't fit as much on the screen ect ect

Well TVs generally have a lower resolution.

My 19" monitor had a 1440x900 resolution, yet my 32" has a 1366x768.

Just how it is.
