Is there an advantage to DVI at all? Cause I'm looking at an Acer LCD, but it doesn't have DVI, only VGA.

There really isn't any difference that you can notice.

DVI looks a little sharper, and is a little more responsive.

To me it depends on what you are upgrading from. My ol' mag crt sure did look good to me untill I got the new lcd then I was blown away.... I like the dvi just for the simple fact that thats what a lot of newer monitors are leaning towards.
Since you are goin from a sony crt to lcd you can always get the dvi just because its "better" also I dont know how old the crt is but to me I noticed a diference.

yeah a graphics card's signal is pure digital and when a VGA port is used the card has a special onboard chip that converts the signal the DVI port lets the digital signal straight out to your monitor so what the point of converting a digital signal to analog and the swithching it back to digital when it gets back to the monitor

you have hdtv satalite but an old tv youd have to stick a special box in between the tv and the satalite to make it work. Now you lost the real ability to have HDTV.
