Default Teach me how to mod? [pencil]

I have absolutely no knowledge about volt mods and/or pencil mods. But I see it on OCN all the time. Can someone briefly explain to me how it works? If there are links, it would be great. When you do a pencil mod, do you simply color something with a pencil? I'm going to be lapping my Tuniq this weekend so I might want to mod my mobo if I can get a higher OC.

Thanks!

When you perform a pencil mod, you are drawing a graphic lead to connect two points. This in turn conducts electricity and changes the circuit. You don't want to color it in always with a pencil. Sometimes, a recommend number of strokes is given. Too many dark and you maybe reducing the resistance too much

When you draw on a resistor with a pencil, more current is allowed to pass through the resistor. This increases the voltage available to the chip, allowing for higher speed. You may not want to mod a mobo, since you can usually increase the voltage to the CPU and MB in the BIOS. People usually pencilmod graphics cards, since it is a lot harder to change the voltage through the BIOS.

Why do you want to Vmod an X1900XT? The voltage change is supported by software right?

I know you can change voltages up to a certain point on the newer video cards via editing the BIOS. NiBiTor lets you do it I think. Dunno what to use for ATI cards though.

You can use WinFlash or ATIFlash. I would highly advise against modded any circuitry if you don't know what you're doing. You can always flash a stock BIOS back!

Yes, you can flash the BIOS but that doesn't mean it will change the Voltage. Remember A video card's BIOS isn't the same has a motherboard's.

I was reading up and correct me if I'm wrong but if you flash with NiBiTor and change voltage #1 to 1.4v from 1.3v, well the BIOS says the max voltage is 1.4v from 1.3v. This doesn't mean the BIOS will run the card 1.4v. I read this from a site where they know about modding Video card's BIOS etc.. I can be still wrong
