For an independent science research class at my school, I chose to work with guitar amplifiers. Specifically "The solid-state emulation of vacuum tube devices in audio amplification applications". Basically that means making an inexpensive, durable transistor-based amplifier that sounds as good as a big expensive tube amp. This coming school year will be my second year in the class, and will be the year I will be doing most of the work. I've already done some prototyping for proof of concept, and results have been promising. I built a small tube amp from scratch (about 6 watts, nothing special) and my solid-state amplifier gave a pretty darn close output when measured with an oscilloscope. Now that I've got the little one working, it is time to step it up. Eventually I will work on designs emulating the big famous amplifiers, but for now I will be working with something smaller. This will require a bigger cabinet than the little one I built for the 6 watt.
The cabinet will be a semi-open 1x12" built of either 3/4" plywood or MDF. The dimensions are 16"x12"16".

Sweet, sounds like fun
, You can make yourself alot of money fabricating combo amplifiers, even if they are 6 watt, tube or solidstate.

Hey, a bass amp is on the list too. I've got a '70s Fender Mustang Bass in bright safety orange that I've never gotten to play through a nice amp and cab, only through DI.
My project hierarchy is: Guitar amp>>stereo subwoofer>>top-secret (until the patent is approved anyway ) live microphone system>>analogue modeling amp>>bass amp/cab>>keyboard amp/cab. Everything should be done by this time next year.

This project kind of died, as funding quickly ran dry. I had too many other projects going on at the time. I'll revive it soon.
I did however finish the speaker cabinet. I realized that it was about the right size for a 12" sealed subwoofer. I reinforced the joints, sealed the back, and stuck a cheap cone in it. It sounds OK for music, but doesn't have enough punch for movies. I'm planning on putting some feet on it and making it down-firing, which will help a bit. I think before I finish the guitar amp I'll finish my other subwoofer project. I'm making a large sub for movies in my TV room. I haven't decided on a design, but I'm thinking either 2x12 or 1x15 either ported or with a passive radiator.
