Default Cannot recieve IP

I have a 256 kb connection and ECI B-FOCuS Router. about a month ago my internet connection when dead ( no ip ) even though i have no changes to the hardware or software. i called up the sp they try to release my ip many times( they checked up my settings and told me they were fine) . then to see if the ethenernet card is dead i tried 2-3 results still no results. then my brother came so i connected up the line to the laptop and everything worked fine . now that my brtohers gone i have a dead connection. What might be the problem and what do you recommend i do ?

Well we know the connections fine if your brother plugged in a laptop. If he plugged it in directly well then you need to get a new router possibly. Try out a new router yet?

The fact that his brother connected fine with the laptop means that the router is fine. DO NOT GET A NEW ROUTER. Did you try replacing the network card on your computer? See if you can borrow one from another machine or from a friend. Also, what cable did your brother use? A different one to connect, or the one going to your machine? If a different one, then try using a different cable. It could be as simple as that. Also, check your netowk card for any signs of corrosion where you jack in. You might just be able to clean out that part and get it working again.
