I got home from work today and my internet was not working, I have road runner and the surfboard modem, the online light and send light were off. So after trying to get it to work (reseting modem, trying to renew ip, etc.) I forced myself to call customer service, well all they did was tell me that they too saw my modem as being offline and told me to reset it and make sure everything was connected and then offered to have someone come out soonest time Monday. /cry
Well anyways I got some food and came back upstairs maybe 30mins after i got off the phone, and bam all the lights were on and internet was working but going rather slowly. So I tried it without the coaxial splitter and it was running at normal speed but with the splitter its only download around 50-65kbs, but uploading at normal speeds. This makes no since to me, I was probably just gonna go to radio shack tomorrow and buy a new splitter any suggestions before then? EDIT: Ok I did some more speakeasy tests and its jumped up to like 88-98 kbps but still alot lower then it should be.

A bad splitter can affect speeds. I had such terrible RoadRunner service when I moved into our new home due to bad cable (cheap) and shoddy splitters.
The best bet is not to use them but rather have them install a block at the service panel to ensure your getting the best quality signal. Trust me, I fought with them for a year or more but again this is when RoadRunner first came to our NE Ohio area as we were a demo market. I spent some cash and re-wired the house and it made a difference but the biggest was finally convincing them it was ~their~ problem and not mine. A Level 3 tech was dispatched after my angry tirade and found that some bad wiring at the box (underground lines) was the main culprit. I'll try to dig up a URL that RR techs use to test line conditions and modem if I can but it's been years since I've had those problems.. Also, check the number of splits you have as each can remove a bit of the signal each time. The best is only 1 if you have to.

Try the other cable thats connected to the splitter before getting a new splitter. Perhaps its kinked or just no good.

I've tried both cables from the splitter and both of the splitter out ports. Ictinike, that does sound like a great idea, I'm not sure how many splitters probably one more downstairs, not sure on that, but what would they charge to install it at the service panel though.. I mean if I could spend like $15 or w/e for a splitter to get it back to what it was that would be perfectly fine with me.

Sounds like your ISP may have been getting some work done...
What most high speed ISPs are doing these days is split the signal over many slower vioce capable lines. So if some of the lines are getting worked on...some of your internet won't work either.

As well, since I can't seem to locate that modem test URL (it was NE Ohio anyways) you can go to help.rr.com and plugin your location information to get page that shows Network Status for your service area. At times, before calling on slow nights or problematic times I've checked there and found there were issues or planned service outages. You could also be going through the recent 10-15mbps upgrade they are doing to the Ohio areas. This did have some slowdowns while they were upgrading switches and local POP's but quickly (within a day or two) resolved it self and now getting great speeds; sometimes unbelievable.

Give this a shot. For Ohio my closest is Cinncy.. I rate fairly high based on this result and over 1.3million tests run worldwide.. Not too bad

Last Result:
Download Speed: 6820 kbps (852.5 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 490 kbps (61.3 KB/sec transfer rate) Without the splitter, it's gotta be the problem, I'll just go buy a new splitter tomorrow thanks for the help though. With splitter: ![]()

Ok so I went to radioshack and bought a new splitter for cable modems, and its still not working through a splitter. I tracked the cable that comes to my room, its directly from the time warner box outside, it goes from there and is connected to a dual female extender to make it to my room, so its the only splitter coming to my room and it wont work with my internet anymore for whatever reason. Anyone know why it would randomly stop working through a splitter?
