Port forwarding is controlled through the router, and as far as I know it is not connected to the firewall. And if you did disable your router firewall, you should enable it. It is the strongest firewall and it will block the most intrusions to your system.

There's two type of firewalls, your OS software based and then tour hardware /router based. If you disable one then the other still works. The majority of VPN/NAT routers won't let you disable the firewall feature. And for a NAT router you always have to properly configure port forwarding (just the nature of NAT). I would suggest keeping your firewall on, and with proper forwarding you shouldn't have a problem.
