Default Whats the Diff between Crossover and patch Cat5?

Will certain things not work if I use crossover cable as apposed to patch cat 5? . .I thought that Windows automatically figured it out for some reason as I never had trouble with either but my roomate says they perform diff functions. . . Can someone explain please?

Thank you.

A cat5 crossover cable is designed to directly connect two computers, with out any routers or other networking hardware. A cat5 patch cable is simply a short bit of cat5 that would you use in a normal network enviroment (to connect your PC to a wall jack, or your router to a switch, etc)

Yes, you can use the patch cable for the HTPC.

Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) is fine for almost any situation. the shielding is meant to block out electrical sound. However, there are cables that are designed for outdoor use, and I have yet to look into them.

Ehh . .my mom found a box of cable with ~500 ft of cable left from her golf course's renovation so Im using ~100 ft of it to run from my HTPC in the living room to my router. I buried all the cable around the house So It should be fine. . . I have yet to master the art of crimping cat5 th0ough .. it sux
