How do I set up a network for 2 computers? - Overclock.net

Hi

So me and my friend (I'm at his house) want to set up a 2 person Network for Civilazation4.

I had one working but its all crapped up.

Whenever I use the "set up a home or small Network" option It doesn't work.

How do I set up a simple Network connections for 2 computers?

Were both on XP

I'm a N00B At Networking (i know I cannot do thi sand have 250rep

)

1st) make sure that the two PCs are on the same workgroup
2ed) connect the two PCs to the modem/router
3ed) try the game again

Then you need a special cable could the cross cable.

Oh well thats easy:

-Right click my network places>properties
-Right click the network adaptor>properties
-double click TCP/IP
-check: use the folowing IP adress
-enter something like: 10.10.10.** (* being any number make sure these are different on each computer)

Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0

then go to Start>Run>cmd

type in ipconfig, and then type in: ping 10.10.10.** (other computer)

If you get a reply everything should be fine

oh and PS: USE A CROSSOVER CABLE... it wont work to play games with if you dont have one

You Need A Crossover Cable!

Usually a crossover cable is yellow and you can pick them up at most any computer store, even some hardware stores. Basically what it does is switch two sets of connections to trick the computers into thinking their each connecting to a internet/sever source.

then change your IP to 192.168.1.1 & your friends to 192.168.1.2

You can't hook two computers together using one regular ethernet cable, you need a crossover cable, switch, or router.
