Going to be running a home file server on a 3.33ghz 1gb ram celly [woot!]
__________________And I dont know what Os to use or program, I dont know the first thing of running a file server. I know I COULD use filezilla for an FTP. But why would I do that if I could just use like myhq drive or live or something similair? I kindof like hosting my own server though..or the idea. Ive set up multiple game servers before. What is a suggested OS or program? Should i go maybe..ubuntu server instead? How would I go about hosting my own domain/website and files at home on the celeron? I have sufficient bandwidth for me and my friends Id say, 10mb/s down and a little over 1 up. It wont be used too much, I was thinking of limiting the download speed of files to around 75kb/s or so depending on the type of file whether it be a movie or like 25kb/s for pictures. Can I restrict speeds like that by file format or location? Thanks guys!

If you are a n00b and afraid of linux just stick with windows and default ntfs file shares. Server 08 I was part of the beta team and it works really well assuming you are running other windows machines: easy remote hd backups, file hosting ect... Linux is by far the most efficient/reliable methods, but it does require some knowledge. I'd recommend a distro like Ubuntu server or even debian. They come with LAMP or you can easily dl and install LAMP. You'll have to configure SAMBA to share NTFS/FAT32 file types but there are numerous tutorials out there. Game server files can be found online as .tar files. I'd suggest googling linux servers and you can find numerous step by step tutorials.

__________________I do have a decent amount of linux experience, ubuntu and fedora, but nothing too advanced by any means. Im not afraid of using linux. Right now testing for a file server i downloaded a 5 day (pshhh) trial of winFTP server, and it works flawlessly. Accessible thru IE7 and all. Whats the easiest way to run a webserver? Should i just try using anglefire or something ghey? Id like to host my own, I have lots of windows experience/knowiedge. Can I host a web/http server on windows 08? Can I use SSH for remote admin?
