well, first off i would hit up google for some answers.
First, find out what the default ip address are for both the router and the modem. also, you can unplug the modem and still have http access to your router, see if it lets you in that way... I am not sure how to go about doing this on a netgear router, but you should be able to change the ip address of the router in the settings, but you will need to figure out how to get into it first... typically, you cant change the ip address of the modem.

Question: Is the Versalink modem a "Gateway modem"? If so, is there an option in its settings to set it to "Bridge mode"? If you use "bridge mode", then you have to put your UserID and password into your Netgear router to log onto your ISP service.
OR... you can change the IP of the Netgear router. To do this, disconnect the Versalink modem from your network and type in the IP address of the Netgear (usually something like 192.168.0.1). Once you have accessed the Netgear router, you can change it's default IP range to something like 192.168.10.1 so that it will not conflict with the modem using the other IP address when you reconnect it. Once you have changed the Netgear's IP addy, you can then address the modem separately from the router. If your network ID/Password are pre-loaded into the modem then I'd recommend this method over bridging so that you don't have to use the router to bother with logging you on to the network. After this change, you should be able to manage all of the other Netgear settings as you would normally using the new IP address that you assigned.
