yes, that's exactly what I am explaining. I recommend the WRT54GL as you can put custom Linux based firmware on and do more on it.

WDS is an option, or you can use 'Client Bridged' mode. WDS has more in the way of features, while client bridged is faster (both to set up, and connection wise).

Can you explain why the Linux version of the WRT54G is so much superior? I understand you can re-flash the firmware but why is that so advantageous?

I don't know anything about it other than it exists, but couldn't you just throw DD-WRT on it and achieve the same effect?

I believe the reason is that the gL is always compotiable with DD-WRT, while some of the plain G routers are not (different versions of this router. some can run DD-WRT, some can't). Getting a GL ensures you can use DD-WRT if you so choose. The reason most of us will tell you to use DD-WRT is it is far superior to the manufacturer firmware that comes on routers, is more secure, has more featuers, and is more stable.

Indeed. It's all to do with the amount of Flash memory. The Flash memory is what stores the firmware, and to reduce costs, they put less in to newer versions. Of course, this meant there was not enough space for DD-WRT - you can install the Mini version, but it has less features - I have also heard that the newer versions have cheaper plastic and break quite easily, as well as running hotter and work less well in general.

The Linux version is effectively just the same as the older versions - it has more Flash Memory and RAM, and is of a higher build quality.

Well let me ask this. What older non-Linux versions had the more memory and would I have to use DD-WRT on both routers I have here in the house? I mentioned in the other thread that I have a WRT54G v5 downstairs now and need another one for up here.

You can run DD-WRT on one and stock firmware on another if you want.

I think V4 and before were ok, check the DD-WRT site's compatibility list to make sure.

Well my local stores don't have the Linux version of the router and I want to get this done today.

Whats the diff. between the G and GS? Any good reason to pick one over the other as far as the DD-WRT aspect goes? Do you have to have 2 of the same to be able to use the speed boost?

In which case, I'd say just get the G version and use DD-WRT mini - is should still be fine as far as I am aware.
