Unhappy cant get my ip to change with a router in the middle

How do i change IP?
I recently joined cable 20MB, after a long run with adsl 8MB
so for me change ip was just disconnect then connect
but with cable it seems impossible. disconnected modem still same ip

Internet > Modem > Router > Computer
No IP Change What So Ever

Internet > Modem > Computer
IP Change if you do the following
1. Command Line - 'ipconfig /release'
2. Unplug power-supply from the Cable Modem, for 2 minutes.
3. Command Line - 'ipconfig /renew' - DO NOT PRESS ENTER YET!
4. Reconnect the power-supply back into the Cable Modem.

So i did the Internet > Modem > Computer then attached the router even after getting a new ip and then putting the router on the ip changes bak to the old ip

there is a soft reset on the router softwear but thats on restoring factory settings, even that does not give new ip, not does the release and renew button the router give a new ip

some cable companies don't use a true DHCP anymore, they provide you a specific IP address according to your account or your router info.

also ipconfig /release and /renew only change the ip on your computer not the router.

i'm confused though, so you got a new ISP, does your internet work and you just want to change it? or are you trying to change the IP from your old ISP to your new?

yeah, while not being "static" in the true sense of the word, it is likely that while in the same location from the same modem you will continue to get the same IP no matter what you try and do. If you are behind the router what does it matter? What does your IP look like, if it's of the form 192.168.1.xxx then that is router specific and if you want a different internal private IP from the router you can set that in windows by going to network connections and telling it to assign a specific number.

are you trying to change the IP on your computer, or on the router itself? most likely you won't be able to change the IP on the router, not easily at least. like we said, most companies now issue a single IP to you instead of true dynamic IPs.
