Default MAC Address security

How secure is having the Router (Linksys) set to allow only certain MAC Addresses with no other security?

I am having problems getting a connection using any type of encryption on my kids desktop. If the network is open, everything works great with great signal and speed. If I disable the SSID Broadcast, it will not find it, even though it is in the accounts. With encryption enabled,it finds the network but it just sits on "Acquiring address" for a while then says I have limited or no connectivity. I have tried resetting the router, re-installing the wireless card drivers etc.
I am just needing some security till I can get this figured out, and I figure MAC address filtering is OK for my needs for now (1 neighbor does not even have a computer, another has only a hard wired desktop, and 2 more have their own wireless network (both unsecured). I am really not all that worried about somebody hacking into my network, but don't want it completely open.

Just FYI, my laptop (D-link PCMI card) and my dads laptop with built in wireless have no issues with the wireless encryption, so I am thinking it may be the wireless card in the desktop (Airlink).

I am close to just saying screw it and hard wiring the kids also.

Default

I just read a post in another forum that said that some routers will only recognize a -z characters and 0 -9 numerals for the encryption password.

Check Administrative Tools > Services. This sounds like there is a Service that is disabled.

Post a list or screenie of disabled & manual services.
