sorry for the multiple bumps.
about reinstalling windows...does that affect the programs i've installed? like AIM, CoD4, Steam and what not? gah. i vaguely remember fixing this problem (or having it go away by itself) some time ago...

If you reinstall windows, the acual game files will be there, but you will have to reinstall most games and applications to use them properally.

Hmm...You can try resetting your winsock catalog. That works on occasion...And it doesn't harm your computer if it doesn't work.
Go to Start > Run > Type in "cmd" and hit enter. Then in your command prompt type in - netsh winsock reset catalog EDIT: On the offchance that your running XP SP1, it needs to be netsh int ip reset resetlog It'll ask you to restart your computer afterwards. Also if you want, before you restart type in - ipconfig/flushdns That resets your resolver cache. It's not a guaranteed fix, but definitely something you could at least try before you reformat...
