Talking Just got my new Router

So as stated, just got my new router, yay.

Step 1) Installer router
Step 2) verify i still have internet on my lappy
Step 3) verify the router IS compatiable with DD-WRT... yay

so... at this point it should be obvious that i'm fully intending to flash this thing to DD-WRT. I am a network tech and know my way around a router, however i haven't flashed one is 5+ years, and just want to make sure i'm extra careful when i'm doing it, cause bricking my 1 day old router would suck.

Any advice\things to watch for while doing the swap over. Also i keep hearing people talk about Tomatoe firmware. What would be the pro's\con's of DD-WRT vs. Tomate, and which would you reccomend.

I have a Buffalo as well, and I use DD-WRT v24 (beta, I think it is.)

v24 seems to have more features and be more stable than v23, but for some reason I can't get the MAC filter and URL blocker to work. Could be just my router for some reason or another, though.

I could never get Tomato to install, so I can't comment on that. They used something like .o7 for an extension - something I've never heard of and have never been able to extract.

Oh, and make sure when you flash your router with the firmware, you get the EXACT one for your model. There's a Linksys router with a similar model number to my Buffalo, and when I kept trying to flash it with the Linksys version and kept wondering why it wasn't working. Luckily my router has a fail-safe mode, so it doesn't get 100% bricked; it'll go into a "hmm I'm bricked, I wonder if he's trying to flash with something good this time... Let's see what's coming through the ports" mode upon restart.

To much to list IMO....I love the layout and it is STABLE.....the uptime on mine is 59 days, no interruptions. It has so many features that I do not even know what some of them are, lol. Realtime on the fly bandwidth monitoring...QoS...it can run scripts...has a built in scheduler, I can do ping, tracert and whois lookups from within the router....

Basically, it turns a cheapy router into an extremely versatile and powerful router...

EDIT:
I also forgot that it is compatible with basically every DDNS service available

When you flash make sure that you are connected via the LAN and not the WAN. I've seen too many routers fried because of people flashing their router via wireless. DD-WRT is an amazing firmware to use. Enjoy!

I've flashed with wireless. Well more like I "upgraded" through the router's interface, but still the same concept. The only thing is that you gotta change to the default network name because the router will have its settings reset.
