I'd set up a local domain and enforce group policies. You could set up one box as the domain controller/firewall and then have anotherbox just host files/printserver or whatever you want it to be. That way you'll have the benefits of an Active Directory. It all depends on your budget and how much time you are will to put into configuring your network.

why dont you look up software like schools use to lock like everything up...u cant tell its running cause you can lock even using the start menu...u can still dl stuff...but thats were you just install a firewall with parental controls and block all web addresses that can allow them to dl music...oh and websense...they block websites also idk if its a program that runs off a server or what but its works great if you want to keep ur internet traffic business specific and windows update also

Sorry for the thread necro.....
I'm in a similar situation - I'm looking to set up a network where user files and settings (and printers) are accessible from any terminal on the network, and it would be very nice to have some remote administration capabilities, as well. Previously, like the OP, I had thought that Active Directory was a good solution, but once I got into the process of trying to set it up I realized it was more involved than simply creating a domain and user accounts to correspond to it, plopping it into my network, and changing the clients to be on the domain. The network as it stands now is as follows: Incoming internet -> Verizon router -> 2 clients and a WRT54G configured as a WAP -> 2 more clients + laptops Should I simply make do with a workgroup setup, or would it be worth my putting in the effort of something more advanced (even if it is not a full domain-based network)?

^^^Novell's OneNet would be perfect for this but it would involve learning a new NOS.So IMO as long as it isn't broke don't fix it.Just my 2 cents.
