Here is what i'm planning/trying to do. I recently found some decent parts in a friend's garage, and built a spare computer to tinker around with just for fun. So right now, my main computer is hooked up to my wireless network with a wireless USB adapter. What i want to do, is make the spare computer a backup server. But i don't want to buy a wireless card for it (even though that would be the easiest option) I want to share a folder on the spare rig with my main rig, and share the internet with the spare rig. The problem is, with vista, i can't have internet and the shared folder at the same time, let alone share the internet.
Here is how i have things hooked up: ![]() Can anyone help me with my problem? Oh, and each computer has a fresh install of vista and i have gotten them on the same work group, it's just that when i add internet into equation, it gets all messed up.

I'm guessing what you're talking about is ICS? Internet Connect Sharing... in that case I would think you would want a network bridge.

tried a network bridge. But the spare rig couldn't get on the internet.

Maybe get another wireless adapter for the other computer? Wireless is nasty stuff...

it's not the wireless i'm having problems with. it's the adding of a second computer (through a wired connection) to my wireless. It's a proplem in settings on the OS (Vista) side rather than hardware side.

Try setting up the wired connection by itself to join the network(workgroup/security etc, then resetting it up the way you have illustrated and then bridging the two together. And why not map a network drive for the folder you want to share. Just some thoughts.

well, i've tried after a fresh install, setting up the wired, and sharing the folder/drive, then adding my wireless, but then stupid windows won't let me rename my wired network, or even merge with my wireless. So i get to choose between internet and no shared drive, shared internet and no shared drive, or no internet on the two computers but have shared folder. This is confusing me. I've even tried a network bridge, but all i get is my main rig (the one connected to wrielss USB adapter) on the interent, but no shared drive or internet on the second rig.

I did a little research and it seems that in order to use ICS you have to have 2 NIC's ,one for internal and one to connect to the internet.I'm thinking there should be someway to do what you want, but then again maybe not(seems simple enough).I'll keep trying to find something for you(fingers crossed).

I've done this myself, though with XP's ICS while doing a net install of Gentoo on another machine.
All I used was an ethernet crossover cable between the 2 machines, and the XP machine running ICS has a PCI Wireless NIC. Can you ping the other machine from either system? It should work both ways.
