Default Recommend me: network traffic monitoring software

Hey guys,

My neighbors came up with an idea: to share my internet connection, and in turns we would split the expenses.

My network is kinda like this for now:

ADSL router with 3 rigs connected:
  • one rig thru ethernet
  • 2 rigs thru WiFi
The idea would be to give him the WiFi password so that he can connect with his lappy and we would share the costs. This is the good part.

The bad part would be if they decide to ented some P2P network and potentially get me in trouble. Is there any traffic monitoring tool that I can use to monitor the router's activity (no, the ISP doesn't offer anything) or maybe is there any other way to ban P2P traffic on their IP?

Thanks for reading and if you have an idea I'm all ears... or eyes

D.

Hehe sounds like me, maybe a college student too? Made it through this year doing this, not sure a way to see ALL activity on the router but if your worried about them DL torrents then wouldnt they just admit to it if they were caught? There really no point to take everyone down lol

i'm not sure what options your router has, but some have the ability to block certain programs and services and ports.

throw up a Linux box with a wireless card... set it up as an access point. You could filter stuff using IPCop that would only filter traffic on that access point, and not your traffic.

The problem with P2P is that all ports are always re-assignable, so if you block a certain port range, its easily assigned to a new one.

IPCop can filter out certain kinds of packets so that even if they are on non-standard ports, they wont come through.

Thanks, reps added to my good men. I'm browsing thru the router's options to see what it can do...

*EDIT: Not much apparently. I may have to use the network server DJZeratul was talking and Linux isn't my strong point, but we're learning...

Thanks again,

D.

i would say get a copy of ubuntu, its one of the most user friendly linux distributions. IPCop can take a while to learn, but there are lots of guides on the internet on how to configure it to filter certain kinds of traffic.

another fun thing you can do on april fools or some such is flip the images upside down and cause the text to be typed backwards... i think theres a guide on how to do that as well. dont go overboard though, this guy is paying you for your services
