Hi there, I'm having a problem with this router. My neighbor has a broadband internet connection and we agreed on sharing the internet, i'm paying the half of the connection and im getting 2MBPS!!
![]() Anyway, the problem is, that for some reason, when I connect to the network, the connection is very unstable. Let's say that I connect to his wi-fi network (that btw, it's not protected) and sometimes i can get into the internet, but some other times i can't. I tried on XP and Vista. I made and analysis with Vista and it said that the router can't gove me a DNS address or something like that. It gives me an IP but I can't get the internet because of the DNS. BTW, my Wi-Fi adapter is an Encore ENUWI-G2 based on a realtek RT8187B. i had to use 2 USB extensions of 1.4 meters to place the adapter out of the window to get a better signal, if that's useful for ya :P Why do u think this is happening? Is there any way to fix this?

Is it possible to flash the router from my PC without having to go to my neighbor's house and flash it from there?

I used a neighbors wifi once, and had to call him every time his router required a reboot. Since I'm not sure about the security of his network, I think it best you go next door and explain the benefits of flashing to the DD-WRT firmware, and let him know you can do it for him. Maybe he will let you. You could flash if you knew his routers home page ip and his network admin password. Should be simple if your sharing connection already. However if your not even connecting to his local network than it may be easier to just flash from his console.

If the wireless isnt' secured there may be a better option. Try logging into the router as the admin. Default for a Linksys is admin admin if i recall. You should be able to set the router to use static DNS servers. If you can then google Free DNS and find the IP's for the free DNS servers. Force the router to use these and this often clears up DNS issues.

Well, it seems to be that the network has been opened, he said that because no one else has cutting edge technology of wi-fi in the area (i think that's stupid btw) there was not gonna be any problem...
Anyway, the network is absolutely open and on vista i can connect to his local network, so yeah we can say that I have access to the router. How do I log in to the router as the admin?? and then, what do i have to do to fix the DNS problem?

run command line netsh or flushdns clear the previous wireless connections and attempt to reconnect. You would need his admin password to access his secure network or make changes to the router.

the wrt54g doesn't require a user name to log into it if it's default it's just
user name: [blank] password: admin if he changed the password you would have to find that out.
