Never seen that done before tr8rjohnk is this a different way of giving the PC a static ip ? +1

Yes, you can assign a static ip this way even if the service provider doesn't assign any static numbers.

Also, you said "different" and I'm still learning so could you clarify as to how else you would assign the pc a static address? Thanks.

I'm still learning myself,anyway Network Places>Network connections>right click the adapter you want to give the static ip to>Properties>Scroll down to Internet Protocols TCP/IP>Properties and then assign accordingly.

EDIT:For Vista it's basically the same.Network>Network Sharing>Manage Network connections.
