Hard question.

I have used a bunch.

Good free antivirus protection
AVG, I like avg better than avast! because of the out look and how much easier it is to read. Scans as great as nod32 and kaspersky, but is for free, so there will be some limited features in protection, but since you are only asking about antivirus, i will not go too deep about it. Using avast! kinda slows down my computer, unlike AVG.

Paying antivirus
I found nod32 and kaspersky to be most effective, but kaspersky takes too much sources when scanning and updating. When it updates, you may not use the internet (well it does not load for me) and the computer starts lagging, maybe because I use an old computer, but those are some symptoms. With nod32, you do not feel it as hard as kaspersky. Both of them load aroudn the same time, just that nod32 has this annoying graphical interface that pops up during loading, which I do not like and kaspersky does not. They both use the same scanning engine which are pretty top to me.

lol good point

but I just mean I havent had any real problems or errors or issues in that time.

I have had avast installed with everything turned off for a while and I do a scan in the past maybe one or two times a year.

The only other thing I really use to scan is adaware.

Any way my vote is for avast

I also use Nod32 and you can disable the splash when you boot up, it's in the options.

I got Nod32 and since then I can't download any torrents... It's kinda pissing me off but I'm thinking it could also be SP3's fault. Anyone having problem downloading torrents with Nod32 at default settings?

(I'm not totally hi-jacking since I also recommend Nod32 or Avast for the free alternative )

There is no definite BEST antivirus. Certain ones are better at certain things than others.
