I've heard lots of praise for Nod32. The best free antivirus in my opinion would be Avast. AVG doesn't have realtime scanning.

Nod32 is the best i've used. I also use McAfee, but it is a system process hog.

I find them intrusive and annoying to deal with but I also turn off every windows security but i am the only one who goes on my rig.

On my wives computer I use Avast anti-virus. It is free and is some solid software.

And how do you know that you don't have a virus if you don't have anything to scan for it?

I use avast anti-virus for a few reasons.
1. Very easy to use and understand (not just for me but people i help)
2. Has real time scanning (download a known virus and watch it do its job)
3. updates itself with no interaction.
4. Setup is easy, all you need to do is tell them your a free user and they give you a key...thats it!
Avast has never failed me yet! I recommend it to everyone.
