Well, only because I already have one router and the other on the way. I will probably never need more than 2 open ports anyways. Besides, the fastest I can get from my ISP is 10 Mbps, so there isn't much more I am willing to share, lol.

You don't even have to share the internet connection.

At my school I frequently have a couple computers hooked up, and it is very convenient to just have a $30 Linksys switch.

It will also save you troubles of DHCP and such.

I know, but that is one of the main reason I want to network these PC's.

Dralb, trust me. Save yourself the time and effort between having a router behind a router, and buy a cheapy switch.

And make sure its a switch and not a *shudder* hub..

But anyways, you really dont seem to know what your doing with routers, so trust me, it will probably be hard for you to configure the routers correctly. The problem with routers is because each router is a seperate network. A switch just extends the network. If you need any more reason, than I can go into depth lol.

True, but thats how I learn I am slowly picking up knowlege from each different aspect of computing and I have never done much networking. I am really using this as a way for mw to learn how these things work and how to set them up. I don't pretend to think it is easy and will be doing much more research before I do any of this. I very well may end up getting a switch, but just becuase it is hard hasn't stopped me before, lol. I do appreciate the advice.

Honestly, I'd have recommended a switch as well, however since he really was trying to get wireless in there (hence buying the new router) and already owned the previous router, it's a cheap workaround until he really wants to move on up to a switch if necessary.

Sometimes you just use what you go to do what you need to do.

Well, even so.. You almost never see a router behind a router in a home network; in businesses you see alot bigger routers, that have alot more customizability to them, and you usually use a CLI for those anyways, making what you learn here really isolated in where you can use it...

Just easier to buy a switch and be done with it. If you wanna learn about networking, then dissect the options you have on the router your using, learn about protocols like DHCP, TCP, UDP, learn common ports, learn how to do port forwarding, and learn about NAT.

Link to switches. It will save you a lot of trouble. I have a few of the Netgear 8 port and they work great.
