Default Best order for routers?

OK, I have a wireless router coming (thx Duckie ) and already have a regular router. Does it matter what order I hook them up? I am planning to use them both, but I am not sure how to hook it up without creating conflicts. The wireless is a WRT54GS (flashed with DD-WRT) and the other is a basic linksys (I'll get model later if it matters) I assume that it doesn't matter since most of the PC's are connected via cable and the only thing using the wireless (ruight now) is a laptop.

Personally I would trust the DD-WRT router more than the other one. It might be faster, and the firewall might be better.

So Modem -> WRT54GS - > other router.

Though the order probably doesn't matter too much, I know the DD-WRT would have more administrative stuff, so having it command the other router and stuff might be better.

Why do you need the other router at all?

Why don't you just connect everything to WRT? If it doesn't have enough ports for you just use the other router as a switch and connect it to wrt. I would do like 3 computers + other router to wrt and the rest to the other router.

I currently have 4 PC's and will need to add more eventually. Since I assume both routers only have 4 ports, I was going to use the 2nd for additional PC's. I will probably just use the wireless for now anyway, but was just curious if it mattered.

edit: also, will the 2nd router automatically configure itself when plugged in to the wrt?

No, the 2nd router will NOT autoconfigure. If it has an option for bridged mode or Access Point mode that'll be the simplest configuration for you.

FYI most wifi routers can support all 4 physical ports and 20+ wifi connectiosn, so if your future upgrades will have wifi cards isntalled (why not at $10.00 a piece ) you will only need 1 router.

If it were me, I'd use the newer router to handle the DHCP function in the network.

Just be sure to disable the DHCP fuction on your wired router when you plug it in to the network behind the wireless router.

Once you disable the DHCP, the wired router should act as a switch more or less.

You do know that the wireless router will have outputs for wired computers

I'd just use the wireless for wired as well and only use one router

thx for the input. I know the wireless will have ports too, but I sometime work on PC's for friends and family, so when I have them, I am looking at 5 or 6 PC's connected via cable. I will probably run the cable from the modem to the WRT in my PC room. Hook up my 2 PC's to the WRT and add the router to the 3rd port. Then run the the other 2 PC's from that. that will give me at least one open port in my PC room.

Why don't you just have the DD-WRT router handle DHCP and everything, then connect it to a 24 port unmanaged switch? They are pretty cheap off Ebay.
