If you're a working IT pro then you deal with these things and it's easier to remember, if you're just a home PC enthusiast trying to remember information that you never use, doesn't pertain to you is often more challenging.
So what would you recommend to a 14-year old looking for the A+ cert for a job at BestBuy or something like that?

I got my A+ cert in high school. If you have a tech advisor or administrator at your school, talk to them and they can probably hook you up with a program. Get the book and study (cram) for about 2 months and it should be relatively easy to pass the test.

I see that you havent come within 10 miles of this test/cert. Please dont provide any bad advice on a subject you know nothing about. Binary data... Electrical pulses? What are you on about??? That knowledge/info has no bearing in the IT services world.

A+ is entry level cert exam. Its not that much of a waste of time. It has the ability to tell an employer that you are capable of the most basic fundamental aspects of troubleshooting computer systems. If you want to go far you will have to do more. But it certainly is not a bad place to start.

ok the guy that posted this response doesn't know jack about how and why it's good to have some kind of cert behind you. i have an A+,MCSE,MCDST. when i got my foot in the door i only had my A+ and i got $15 hr starting that was in 2000. one year after that i was making $18. let' just say that my A+ got me to travel half of this country, japan, england, canada um ocean cruises cause some body had to replace hdd on the cruise ships.oh how hard and yes they asked if i was A+ cert....hahaha, now i own a 3brm house,2 cars,a bulldog,a go kart yeah my A+ was worthless.........

I'd recommend that a 14 year old try his best at school in order to have the option to go to a good university that offers computing courses. A+ certification doesn't mean a thing unless you want to work in a typical small-time PC repair store.

You'd think the ole boys down at CompTIA were a bunch of NAZIs the way you guys like to bash their certifications.

Its a good start and will certainly help land you a job as a technician in a place like best buy.

Agreed. Like DigitalPhreak mentioned, if you want to get into technical fields this is a great first step. An A+ is a foot in the door so-to-speak to get into more advanced levels of the PC world. It's isn't a waste of time. A certification in something is you know something.

Is it a tough job market even with an A+ cert? Is there still a long way to go before landing a decent job (read: career) (Also, would it be required to go back to school and get an official computers background?)

After around a year at my current job, I realize it's just not for me and really, never was. (accounting isn't for everyone!). So just said why don't I go for something I love. So if this is the way in, sign me up!
