It goes nothing into detail about knowledge on how a computer/motherboard and it's components really work and communicate . Nothing about binary data or electrical pulses and conversion, nothing like that at all. I recommend you dont waste your time on it, but you said it was for fun, so enjoy I guess if you really want it.

Yes we all hear about how geek squad is a horrible company. I've even run into someone telling me their hard drivers weren't perpendicular when they were and that you don't need high amps on your 12v rails to run a decent system.

While it is answers like what I just gave that make stores/employees look bad. Its also this lack of knowledge and lack of certs which give people such as myself the opportunity to apply for this place and get to the head position within a few months time. I just passed my 601 Essentials and got around a 755 on it which is roughly a 82% score if im not mistaken. I have my 602 IT Tech tomorrow at the local community college which I'm hoping to pass.

When an employer sees this, in their mind its gold. In my mind its "I got a decent starting job". So don't knock what you don't understand, we all had to start somewhere. 8 years ago I knew nothing, now I can say I do. So don't forget YOU were in that SAME position as the person seeking to do something with their life!

I see what your saying venist, I really do. But, the A+ cert will only land you low paying computer technician jobs. While the Security + will only land you a job in entry network security. But, the person with the degree will be taken first hand . For example, I was at an interview once for a company hiring a network administrator position, as were other people.. I asked the guy next to me what his education was like, He told me he was A+ and Security+ certified. Then I asked the other guy next to me what his education was like, He said CCNA cert, Linux cert, Microsoft cert. I said oh cool, I have a 4 year bachelors degree in Network design and administration. The manager hired me and sent every one else packing their resumes. But, not every one can afford to go to college and get a degree, So I recommend if you want a good paying job, but cant afford college, get Cisco Certified atleast. Comptia is a good place to start, I will give it that much.

BA takes 4 years, and you flip burgers while you work on it.
A+ takes 1 year (or less if you study at home as opposed to taking the courses). Now you can spend the next 3 years working entry level IT, getting tuition reimbersement, and gaining experience...... Your point still doesn't hold water.

I lived by that while I was working to get my MCSE.

Its a great tool.

Edit: Mike Meyers certification prep books are some of the best.

Why flip burgers? why not work some where else like a warehouse for $10 instead of $4 at mcdonalds? My point is if you dont have the time nor the money to go to college, get CCNA certified so you can at least make a good living, sure it costs more than "A+" but it surely pays off! Comptia is a good place to start if you dont want to work anywhere but the IT field.
