Are there any mail clients that will download e-mails from an online account (ie. Hotmail, Gmail, etc) and create local copies rather than just viewing what's on the online accounts?

I believe Thunderbird does that. I have it set up with my Gmail so that when I view my emails, it automatically archives them in my Gmail and creates local copies.

Yes Windows Live Mail does it, downloads all your emails and also saves attachments, looks a little like outlook but it's a lot better.

I wouldn't go say it's better than outlook... But I did use the Windows Live Mail appication and I liked it a lot. Each has their own bonuses. Besides WLM app is just a stripped down version of outlook... SO I can't see how it's better.

Is that in account settings? I use Thunderbird as well and I've only seen the "Leave message on the server" toggle. Does your configuration leave them on server AND make a local copy? Also, is this server dependent? I notice my school's IMAP server has a lot less in terms of accounts settings than my GMail account.

I don't believe it's a Thunderbird setting. It's a Gmail setting... Lemme find it...
Go to Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP Under there you can find all the settings and tweak it to your desire I have mine set to download and archive for incoming mail.

Yea, enable POP support for GMAIL and there is a toggle for downloading and removing from the site..
Either way on GMAIL you have tons of room so I just download and leave them there incase I need a serial, key or purchase receipt while away from my desk.
