Default Nooby download speed question

When I go to the speedtest.net website and do the test, it says I'm getting around 1753kbps download. When I actually go and download something, like a game or something, my download speed never goes over 210kbps. What's the deal?

Speedtest.net is in kBps, while you download in kb\s.

It's a difference of a factor of 8. So 6000kBps is actually about 750KB\s.

I know that speedtests shows your speed in kbp/s. FireFox download window and many download managers shows the download speed in kb/s.

KB/s = kilobytes per second
kbps = kilobits per second

I believe 1 kilobyte is 8 times the size of 1 kilobit

So... kbps divided by 8 = kb/s

1753/8 = 219. It looks about right.

Your actual speed is going to be whatever you pay for.

Whil you download a game from a server or any file for that matter. You will reach a max of the speed it is downloading, because the server has a max upload speed. You can't go over that speed.

So while you could have 10Kbps down and 5Kbps up, and the server you are downloading from has 10 Kbps down and 1Kbps up. You will always reach 1Kbps down from that location.

Their the same thing... It's just different measuring units.

It's like miles to kilometers. You may go 10 miles, but you also went 16km (I know that's not right, but my point still stands).

Lol, I was thinking my actual download speed should be around 1.7Mb/s. Wishful thinking...

Thanks everyone for the explanation

WOW! you guys capolization is all wrong (for some of you) XD...

little b = bit
BIG B = byte

K = Kilo and is 1024 units
M = Mega and is 1048576 units
G = Giga and is 1073741824 units.

s = Seconds
m = Minutes
h = Hours

the unit of measure (K, M, or G) is ALWAYS capitol, the type of data is capatolized based on what it is, and the ammount of time is always lowercase.

Kbs is Kilo bits (per) second
KBs is Kilo Bytes (per) second
and so on...

Not trying to be a smart*** just trying to clear everything up. It gets REALLY confusing when you don't use proper capatolization and start into a big technical debate XD.

P.S.
