Default Wake up computer to share folders

Hello everyone,

I have a desktop and a laptop that i want to network together. I know how to share folders on the two, but i wanted to know if there is a way to have the desktop off, and then try to access the shared folders on the desktop from my laptop. In a sense just turn the harddrive on the desktop so i can see its files from the laptop. Is this possible? I no i can wake up the computer from LAN, but can i have it just turn the harddrive on? Thanks,

GriFF

Having the desktop off is off. No way around having no power.

Maybe an external HD would be a better solution?

You'll need a external lan/network harddisk.

Wake On Lan works even if you're computer is turned off. So long as the power cord is plugged into the machine and it can boot, it will boot now remember. It wakes on any intelligent lan pings which mean from your router as well. So your machine might start up in the middle of the night.

Now, the best way to share it is to actually get a networked enclosure and just stick the drive inside it. This way, you can access it all the time through the network. Easier and works better than having to have your whole machine online when you only want a few files.

Yea, i figured external network storage (NAS) would be the way to go, just wanted to see if it was possible to do what i stated. Anybody have recommendations for NAS drives? Is it better to buy an enclosure and use your own hard drive, or buy a ready to go drive? Thanks for all the answers fellas,

GriFF
