I don't know what I am doing wrong, I have done this before, but now I am thinking it was by luck!!
ISP: Bright House (Time Warner / Roadrunner...same thing right?) I am trying to connect a Windows XP Media Center Desktop (direct conection) to a Windows XP Home Edition Laptop (wireless connection / direct connection) I recently reformatted the Laptop, and now I am lost at what to do. Here is what is going on: Only the desktop can see the Laptop (not other way around) The desktop CAN transfer files to the laptop's shared files (not other way around) This seems like a simple fix, but, still haven't found the solution on google. Thank you for your help, Trevor. |

Have you tried looking at the firewall on the MCE box and laptop?

hm. you just reminded me. To allow filesharing I had to disable the firewall (ZoneAlarm) on the laptop. I recently installed AVG AV software on the laptop as it just was reformatted. the MCE box? on google that turned up "Media center extender box". I use a cable modem hooked up to a linksys wireless router, could that be the problem? disable the simple file sharing? I know how to share / unshare folders, but I do not know how to do that. thank you for your help, I am new to networking (taking a class on it next year). -Trevor. |

Unless you are blocking ports inside your lan with your router and software firewalls, then you hooking up your linksys router to a cable modem is no big deal. Infact, you need the router share your computers if you want to use the internet. (most likely in this situation) To disable simple file sharing do the following: Under My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > Scroll down to the bottom of the bar > There should be a box that is checked, un check it. You will now need to enter a user and pass to access files. Simple thing is just use Administrator and whatever pass you set up or use a different account. Disable Zone Alarm and see if that helps at all.

ok, this is making more sense. The results on google were talking about a password that you need to enter to access files.
Before I do any of this, would it be a problem if I (before I posted this) set up a network using the "Set up a home or small office network" (under "my network places") on the laptop and the desktop? EDIT: ill just try the turn off simple file sharing now. EDIT: only the MCE desktop had the option to turn off the simple file sharing. I will now check to see if I can transfer files to it from the laptop EDIT: on the laptop, under "My network places", I click on "view workgroup computers" and get: Quote:

Using the"Set up a home or small office network" shouldn't make any difference.

I personally have never been able to transfer files directly from my Wireless to Hardwire. I made sure they were on same lan and everything... I dont think it works...
__________________If you wana transfer files you can set up a FTP server and transfer it that way. I personally use http://www.goldenftpserver.com/ no real reason ... was free and worked ... was easy to use. But as for a lan with it... i dont think its possible i have tried and i asked a networking guy about it... if not id love to know how.

I have been able to transfer files from wireless to direct connection before, so I know it is possible,
Quote:
Google said AP Isolation has something to do with wireless communication, is that right? how would I turn off or on that feature? EDIT: and FTP would not work for me, as I would like to use files from one computer to operate a program on another (like use the .DAT file in the GuildWars folder of one computer, and over the network connect to it and play GuildWars on any computer in the network [I have done this before :P]) EDIT posted a minute before this post):Quote:
I will try this. edit on above edit: I went (in my computer) to tools, map network drive, browse. There are files displayed as a tree: My Network Places -Entire Network --Microsoft Windows Network ---(My Network) now, on the laptop, it stops at (My Network) and does not display anything.. on the desktop, it can open (My Network) see the Laptop (and itself), but it can only open Itself to see its shared files, not the laptop's. If anyone wants to try remote assistance I am willing to let you ![]() Last edited by trevor3443 : 06-19-08 at 02:24 PM. |
